A Parent's Guide to Animation as a Career — 14 Questions, Answered Plainly

Your son or daughter has said they want to do animation. This page is for you, not for them. It answers the questions parents actually ask when they visit Monal Academy in Haldwani — about money, jobs, stability and whether this is a serious path — with sources where numbers are involved. Monal Academy is a training academy inside a working animation studio, so read this knowing we have a stake; then come and see the floor and judge for yourself.

1. Is animation a real industry, or a hobby with a certificate?

Real. India's animation, VFX and post-production segment was worth Rs 105 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach Rs 138 billion by 2028, according to the FICCI-EY Media & Entertainment Report 2026. Every kids' channel on YouTube, every animated ad, every OTT series, every mobile game and every explainer video a company puts on its website is made by people trained in this.

The same report also records that 2025 was a slow year — 1.6% growth — and that two studios closed, displacing artists in Bengaluru and Mumbai. It is a real industry with real cycles, like IT or hospitality. It is not a fad.

2. What does it pay?

Published, self-reported data as of 2026 (PayScale, Glassdoor):

Entry pay is modest — comparable to a first job in most fields for a 12th-pass or fresh graduate. The difference is the ceiling: senior and lead animators in the Glassdoor data earn ₹7–25 lakh, and technical roles (rigging, pipeline) pay above artist rates. 3. Will my child have to move to Mumbai or Bengaluru?

Not necessarily, and less so every year. The big film-VFX studios are in the metros. But 2D series, kids' content, editing, YouTube and social media work is increasingly done remotely or in smaller studios — Monal Digital itself is a ~40-person studio in Haldwani. Several of our graduates' roles can be done from Uttarakhand. Some will move for a specific job; many won't need to.

4. Do they need to be good at drawing?

Only for two of the ten programs (Illustration and, to a lesser degree, 2D Animation). 3D animation, rigging, VFX, modelling, editing and the marketing tracks need other things — patience, logic, an eye for movement or timing. The first three months of every program assume no experience.

5. What about the science / commerce stream — is arts required?

No. Any stream. Science students often do well in rigging and VFX; commerce students in performance marketing; arts students in illustration and 2D. It is one of the few fields where the 12th stream doesn't close doors.

6. Is a one-year course enough, or should they do a degree?

For getting hired: employers in animation look at the portfolio or showreel, not the certificate. A one-year program that ends with a reel a studio will watch is enough for a first job. A degree is worth it if your child wants a degree for its own sake or plans to teach. Our after-12th guide compares the three routes side by side.

7. How is a "studio academy" different from a franchise institute?

Franchise institutes teach a fixed syllabus in a classroom. Here, the mentors are working artists on the studio's own productions, the briefs come from those productions, and in the last three months students work on live shots. Visit both kinds. Ask each: "Who will teach my child, and what did they ship last month?"

8. What does it cost, and are there installments?

Fees vary by track; the band is shown on each program page, and installment plans are available. Ask us for the total figure in writing. Ask every institute the same, including software, exam and "portfolio" charges.

9. What is the daily schedule? Is it disciplined?

Full-time, five days a week, on campus. Students are on the floor with the studio team. It runs like a job because it is preparation for one. There is no online or part-time version, which is deliberate.

10. Is it safe for a daughter to study here? Where do students from the hills stay?

The academy is in Karan Tower on Gas Godam Road, central Haldwani. Students commute daily from Kathgodam, Lalkuan, Bhimtal and Rudrapur. Students from Almora, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and the hills take a PG in Haldwani; we keep a list of the PGs current students use and will share it. You are welcome to visit the PG with your child.

11. What if they aren't good enough?

Some students find out in month three that they don't enjoy it. That is a useful thing to learn at 18 rather than at 25. Mentors are direct in reviews; nobody is carried to the end for the sake of it. Talk to us before enrolling about what happens if that's the case.

12. Is AI going to eliminate these jobs?

It is changing them. The FICCI-EY report cites AI tools delivering up to 40% time savings in some workflows. The tasks affected first are the repetitive ones — rotoscoping, clean-up. The roles that involve judgement — animation performance, design, effects, directing a channel — are the ones we train for, and the studio uses these tools itself. Your child will learn with them, not be replaced by them.

13. Does the academy guarantee placement?

No, and be wary of anyone who does. We don't publish placement percentages because we can't stand behind how they're usually counted. What we will do: show you the reels of students who finished, and put you in touch with them.

14. What should we do next?
