VFX Artist Salary in India (2026): What Freshers, Compositors and FX Artists Actually Earn

A fresher VFX artist in India typically starts between ₹2 and ₹3.5 lakh a year, reaches ₹4–6 lakh within a few years, and the top tenth of the profession earns ₹10 lakh or more. Those are the ranges in the two largest public salary datasets as of early 2026, quoted below with their sample sizes so you can judge them. This page exists because most "VFX salary" articles quote a single confident number with no source; here are the sources.

The numbers

Glassdoor also lists median monthly base pay at three large employers: ₹33,000 at DNEG, ₹33,000 at Technicolor, and ₹38,000 at Prime Focus (Glassdoor India). Note that Technicolor's Indian operations closed in 2025 (see below).

For context, the same Glassdoor page gives adjacent animation roles: Animator ₹3–7 lakh/yr, Senior Animator ₹7–13 lakh/yr, Lead Animator ₹6–25 lakh/yr.

How to read these

• They are self-reported. PayScale and Glassdoor figures come from people entering their own pay. Small samples (39–65 profiles) mean a few high or low entries move the average. Treat the ranges as more reliable than the averages.
• The compositor average is skewed. ₹6 lakh average against a ₹2.64 lakh entry figure means the sample includes senior compositors; a fresher should plan on the entry number.
• Monthly vs annual. Glassdoor's India VFX data is shown per month; ₹25,000/month base is ₹3 lakh a year, which lines up with PayScale's entry figure.
• City matters. Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune have the large studios and the higher end of the range. Remote and smaller-studio roles elsewhere sit toward the lower end but with lower living costs.
• Role matters more than title. "VFX artist" covers roto and paint (lowest paid), compositing and FX simulation (middle), and lighting/lookdev and pipeline/TD roles (highest). The 90th-percentile figures are mostly the last group.

What a VFX career actually looks like, in pay

1. 01Year 0–1, junior. ₹2–3.5 lakh. Often roto, paint, prep or junior comp. This is the filter year: the people who stay are the ones who like the work at this pay.
2. 02Year 2–4, mid. ₹4–6 lakh. Compositor, FX artist, lighting artist. Your reel now has shipped shots and you can pick projects.
3. 03Year 5+, senior / lead. ₹7–12 lakh and up; leads and supervisors above that. This is where the 90th percentile lives.
4. 04Sideways: technical roles. Pipeline TD, tools, rigging-adjacent roles often pay above artist rates at the same experience because fewer people can do them.

The 2025–26 picture, honestly

The FICCI-EY 2026 report records that animation and VFX together grew only 1.6% in 2025, and that studio closures — Technicolor in Bengaluru, Jellyfish Pictures in Mumbai — displaced roughly 2,000 and 100 professionals respectively. The same report projects the animation, VFX and post-production segment growing from Rs 105 billion in 2025 to Rs 138 billion by 2028, and cites AI tools delivering up to 40% time savings in some workflows, and 55–65% on rotoscoping in VFX-heavy genres.

What that means if you're deciding now:

• The generalist roto/paint floor is shrinking. Those are the tasks AI tools reach first. Starting there is still normal; staying there is not a plan.
• FX, lighting, compositing and technical roles hold up better because they need judgement, and studios are consolidating around fewer, more capable artists.
• Animation-side VFX is steadier than live-action VFX in India right now, because kids' and streaming series production is domestic demand, not outsourced Hollywood work that moves with the dollar and tax credits.
• A reel with real shipped shots is the hedge. In a tighter market the difference between a hire and a rejection is whether your work has been through a production review.
