3D Animator Salary in India (2026): Fresher to Lead, With Sources

A fresher 3D animator in India earns around ₹2 lakh a year — ₹15,000–₹32,000 a month in the Glassdoor submissions — rising to an average near ₹4 lakh within one to four years, with the top tenth of the profession above ₹8.7 lakh and leads reaching ₹25 lakh. Those figures come from the two largest public datasets, quoted below with sample sizes and dates. If a page tells you a single "animator salary" with no source, close it.

The numbers

How to read these

• Self-reported, small samples. PayScale's 97 profiles and Glassdoor's 50 submissions are people typing in their own pay. The ranges are more trustworthy than the averages.
• PayScale's data is older. Its 3D animator page was last updated in February 2025; Glassdoor's submissions run into 2026. Expect real 2026 entry pay to sit at the upper end of PayScale's entry figure.
• ₹27,000 a month ≈ ₹3.2 lakh a year, which sits between PayScale's entry and early-career figures — the two sources agree.
• The Technicolor median is historical. Its Indian operations closed in 2025 (FICCI-EY 2026); it's on the list because Glassdoor still shows it.
• "3D animator" is a broad title. Character animation on a series pays differently from product or archviz animation. The higher submissions (₹1 lakh/month at 4–6 years) are almost always character animators on feature or high-end series work in a metro.

The ladder, in pay

1. 01Junior animator, year 0–1: ₹1.8–3 lakh. Cycles, background characters, cleanup on someone else's blocking. You're being paid to learn the pipeline.
2. 02Animator, years 2–4: ₹3–5 lakh. Your own shots, your own acting choices. This is where most of the profession sits, and where a strong reel starts to move you between studios.
3. 03Senior animator, years 5+: ₹7–13 lakh. Hero shots, mentoring juniors, first-pass reviews.
4. 04Lead / supervisor: ₹6–25 lakh. The wide range reflects studio size; a lead at a 30-person studio and a lead at DNEG are different jobs.
5. 05The sideways moves. Animation directors, rigging and pipeline TDs, and — increasingly — creators who run their own channels.

Where the pay is, geographically

Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune host the large studios and the upper half of these ranges. Smaller studios elsewhere — including Haldwani — pay toward the lower-middle, but rent in Haldwani is a fraction of Mumbai's, and 2D series and kids' content work is increasingly remote. The honest comparison is take-home after rent, not the headline.

What this means if you're choosing a course now

• The reel is what moves you from step 1 to step 2. Studios hire on the showreel; the certificate doesn't change the offer.
• Body mechanics and acting shots are what a reviewer looks for; creature and layout work sets you apart. That's the module order in the 3D Animation program for a reason.
• Expect the first year to be modest and plan for it. Animators who make it to year three do fine; the drop-off is in year one, and it's mostly people who didn't like the work at the entry pay.
