Video Editor Salary and Freelance Rates in India (2026) — Including What You Can Charge From Uttarakhand

An employed video editor in India earns about ₹22,000 a month at the start — ₹3–6 lakh a year across the profession, ₹5–8 lakh as a senior — while freelancers with the Video Editing skill report an average of roughly ₹400 an hour. Those are the public figures, cited below with sample sizes. Editing is the one creative skill where freelancing from a small town is a normal career, not an exception, so this page covers both paths.

That's the only broad public dataset on freelance editing rates in India, so treat it as a midpoint. In practice freelance editing is priced per video, not per hour, and the range is wide: a talking-head YouTube edit for a small creator sits at the low hundreds of rupees; a 10-minute edit with motion graphics, sound design and colour for a business or a mid-size channel runs into the thousands; retainer work — editing every video a channel publishes — is where steady income comes from. How to read these

• Self-reported and small. Glassdoor's monthly figures are 50 submissions; PayScale's skill-level figure is broader (449) but mixes titles — a "content producer" who edits is in there alongside pure editors.
• Skill pays more than title. PayScale's ₹4.58 lakh average for anyone with the editing skill is above Glassdoor's ₹22,000/month for people titled "video editor". Editors who also do motion graphics, sound or colour earn more than editors who only cut.
• Freelance hourly rates flatter. ₹400/hour looks like ₹64,000 a month at full time; nobody bills 160 hours a month. Freelancers spend a third of their time finding work, revising and invoicing.

The two ladders

Employed:

1. 01Junior editor, year 0–1: ₹15,000–₹25,000/month. Assembly cuts, subtitles, exports. At a studio, agency, news channel or a creator's team.
2. 02Editor, years 2–4: ₹3–6 lakh/year. Your own projects end to end, including sound and colour. This is where motion graphics starts to lift pay.
3. 03Senior / lead, years 5+: ₹5–11 lakh/year. Running a post team, client-facing, the final say on the cut.

Freelance:

1. 01Year 0–1: a handful of clients, mostly local. A café's Reels, a coaching institute's YouTube, a wedding videographer's overflow. Income is uneven.
2. 02Year 2–3: two or three retainers. A channel or brand that pays monthly for every video. This is the point where freelance income matches or beats a junior salary.
3. 03Year 3+: pick your clients. Rates go up because you're turning work away.

Editing from Uttarakhand, specifically

This is the skill that makes staying home viable. Editing needs a laptop, an internet connection and a portfolio; the client doesn't care whether you're in Haldwani or Andheri. What matters:

• Clients in Haldwani, Rudrapur, Nainital and Dehradun — hotels, coaching institutes, real-estate agents, wedding videographers, local news — are mostly unserved by anyone who can cut to a professional standard. That's the local market, and it's where the first retainers come from.
