The Monal Digital studio floor in Haldwani — where this program is taught

Fire, water, dust, magic, weather — everything on screen that moves but nobody animates by hand. Monal Academy's VFX & Compositing program in Haldwani is a one-year, full-time course in simulation and stylised effects for animation, plus the compositing and lighting that turn renders into finished frames. You learn it inside the studio whose shots you'll be working on by month 10.

Who this course is for

  • You're the person who pauses a film to work out how the explosion was done.
  • You like the technical side — settings, simulations, render passes — as much as the artistic side.
  • You've done 12th (science or otherwise) or a degree and want a skill that's in demand across animation, film and advertising.
  • You're a parent: VFX is the most technical of the animation disciplines and, in India, one of the largest by headcount. It rewards patience and problem-solving.

Note that this is VFX for animation — effects and compositing for animated productions — not live-action rotoscoping or green-screen work.

What you'll learn

  1. 01VFX Foundations — the language of effects: timing, silhouette, and reference. Reading real fire before faking it.
  2. 02Particles & Simulation — smoke, fire, fluids and destruction in Blender and Houdini, from setups to art-directed results.
  3. 03Stylised FX for Animation — energy, magic and cartoon physics: effects with shape language that matches a stylised world.
  4. 04Compositing — layers, passes and grading in After Effects and Nuke, assembling renders into finished frames.
  5. 05Lighting & Rendering — light as storytelling: key, fill, mood, and the render settings that get it to screen on budget.
  6. 06Production Term — deliver effects and compositing for live studio shots, matching established show aesthetics.

How the year runs

Months 1–3 — Foundations. Reference, timing, silhouette. You learn Blender first because it lets you see results quickly, and you learn to look at real fire, water and smoke the way an FX artist does.

Months 4–9 — Specialisation. Houdini simulations, stylised FX, then compositing in After Effects and Nuke, then lighting and rendering. Weekly briefs, weekly reviews. By month 9 you can take a shot from raw render to a finished, graded frame.

Months 10–12 — Studio Floor. Live shots from the studio's productions. You match the show's look, hit the deadline, and take the notes. These shots become your reel.

Mentors who ship

The mentors are the studio's FX and comp artists, on production during the year you're here.

Careers after the course

Graduates are prepared for: FX Artist, Compositor, Lighting & Rendering Artist. These are among the most portable roles in animation — the same skills apply in feature film, series, advertising and games.

We don't publish placement percentages. See finished students' reels and talk to them on your studio visit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a science background or coding?

No. Houdini rewards logical thinking, and we teach the small amount of expression-writing you need. Most of the work is visual judgement.

Is a laptop enough for Houdini and Nuke?

On campus you work on studio workstations. For home practice, a mid-range laptop handles Blender and After Effects; we'll tell you what to buy, and what not to.

VFX for animation vs. VFX for film — which is this?

Animation. Simulations, stylised effects, and compositing rendered elements. The skills transfer to film, but the reel you build here is for animated productions.

How is this different from a VFX course at a franchise institute?

You learn on live shots, from FX artists in production, and you match a real show's look under a real deadline. That's what a hiring supervisor looks for on a reel.

Can I do this online or part-time?

No. Full-time, on campus.

What do I make by the end?

A reel with a fire or fluid sim, a stylised FX shot, a lit and composited shot, and production shots from the Studio Floor term.
