3D Character Modelling Course in Haldwani — ZBrush, Blender and Production Topology
Monal Academy · Updated Invalid Date

Before a character can move, someone has to build them. Monal Academy's Character Modelling program in Haldwani is a one-year, full-time course in digital sculpting, stylised character creation, and the unglamorous, indispensable craft of production topology — meshes a rigger thanks you for. In the final term you build a character ensemble to the studio's specifications, and the rigging program next door rigs it.

Who this course is for
- You like making things — clay, Lego, 3D prints, Blender donuts — more than making them move.
- You have patience for detail. Modelling rewards the person who will spend an hour on an edge loop.
- You've finished 12th or a degree and want a skill used in animation, games, product visualisation and 3D printing.
- You're a parent: modellers are hired by animation studios, game studios, architecture firms and e-commerce — it's one of the broadest 3D roles.
What you'll learn
- 01Modelling Foundations — topology, edge flow and clean geometry: the difference between a sculpture and a production asset.
- 02Digital Sculpting — form, anatomy and gesture in ZBrush and Blender, from quick studies to refined characters.
- 03Stylised Characters — appeal in three dimensions: translating 2D character designs into models that keep their charm.
- 04Retopology & UVs — animation-ready meshes with deformation-friendly loops, unwrapped for texturing.
- 05Texturing & Look Development — Substance 3D Painter and shader fundamentals for surfaces and materials.
- 06Portfolio Term — build a character ensemble to studio specifications.
How the year runs
Months 1–3 — Foundations. Blender first, because you see results fast. Box modelling, edge flow, then your first sculpts. You learn to look at a character design and see the mesh underneath.
Months 4–9 — Specialisation. ZBrush sculpting and anatomy, stylised characters from the studio's own 2D designs, then retopology, UVs and Substance texturing. Weekly briefs, weekly reviews. By month 9 you can take a character from a drawing to a textured, animation-ready asset.
Months 10–12 — Portfolio Term. A full ensemble — hero, secondary, prop — to the studio's spec sheet, reviewed by the studio's modellers and then handed to the rigging students. If the rigger complains about your topology, you fix it. That's the job.
Mentors who ship
Mentors are the studio's asset artists, building characters for productions during your year.
Careers after the course
Graduates are prepared for: Character Modeller, 3D Generalist, Prop & Environment Modeller, Texture Artist. Modelling skills transfer to games, product visualisation and archviz, which widens where you can work.
We don't publish placement percentages. See finished students' reels on your visit.
Studying in Haldwani
Karan Tower, Gas Godam Road, central Haldwani — about 10 minutes from Kathgodam station. Daily commuters come from Kathgodam, Lalkuan, Bhimtal and Rudrapur; students from the hills usually take a PG nearby. We keep a list.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to draw?
It helps for understanding form, and we teach the basics. You don't need to be an illustrator; you need to see shapes in three dimensions.
ZBrush or Blender — which matters more?
Both. ZBrush is the studio standard for sculpting; Blender is where you'll do most modelling and where many studios now work. You'll be fluent in both, with Maya for the pipeline steps.
Is a laptop enough for ZBrush?
On campus you use studio workstations. For home, a laptop with 16 GB RAM and a pen tablet handles Blender and ZBrush; we'll advise before you buy anything.
Modelling vs Rigging vs 3D Animation — how do I choose?
Modelling builds the character, rigging makes it movable, animation performs with it. If you love form and detail, modelling. If you love systems and logic, rigging. If you love performance, animation.
Can I work in games after this?
Yes. The pipeline — sculpt, retopo, UV, texture — is the same for games, with different poly budgets. Many modellers move between the two.
Is there a part-time option?
No. Full-time, on campus.
