The Monal Digital studio floor in Haldwani — where this program is taught

Every show begins as a drawing. Monal Academy's Illustration & Digital Art program in Haldwani is a one-year, full-time course that takes you from fundamentals — line, form, light, colour — to finished character sheets and concept frames of the kind the studio's own productions are built on. Your work is reviewed the way the studio reviews its own.

Who this course is for

  • You draw every day already and want to know whether you're good enough. (You'll find out in month one, and then get better.)
  • You want to be the person who designs the character, not only the one who animates it.
  • You've finished 12th (arts, science, commerce — it doesn't matter) or a degree, and you're in Haldwani, Nainital, Almora or Rudrapur.
  • You're a parent: illustration is the front door to animation, games, publishing and advertising. A portfolio from this course is what those employers ask to see.

This is the most drawing-heavy program at the academy. If you don't enjoy drawing for hours, choose another track.

What you'll learn

  1. 01Drawing Fundamentals — line, form, perspective, gesture and anatomy: daily drills that make everything after them possible.
  2. 02Digital Painting — light, shadow, colour and edge control in Photoshop and Procreate, from studies to finished frames.
  3. 03Character Design — shape language, silhouette and appeal; expression sheets and turnarounds a production can actually use.
  4. 04Environments & Props — the places a story happens and the objects its characters hold, designed to stage action clearly.
  5. 05Concept Art & Visual Development — mood, palette and world-building: developing the look of a show before a single asset is built.
  6. 06Portfolio Term — a personal project art-directed to studio standard, reviewed by working artists until it holds up.

How the year runs

Months 1–3 — Foundations. Pencil first. Gesture, perspective, anatomy, every day. You'll fill sketchbooks. By month 3 you can draw a figure from imagination in any pose, which most people who "can draw" cannot.

Months 4–9 — Specialisation. Digital painting, then character design, environments and visual development. Weekly briefs from the studio's own needs — a prop sheet, a background, a villain — with weekly reviews.

Months 10–12 — Portfolio Term. One personal project, art-directed by a working artist, revised until it holds up beside the studio's work. That project plus your best briefs is your portfolio.

Mentors who ship

Mentors are the studio's designers and visual-development artists, working on productions during your year.

Careers after the course

Graduates are prepared for: Illustrator, Character Designer, Concept Artist, Visual Development Artist. Illustrators also work in publishing, games, advertising and as freelancers — the most portable portfolio of all the tracks.

We don't publish placement percentages. See finished students' portfolios and talk to them on your visit.

Frequently asked questions

How good do I need to be at drawing to start?

You need to want to draw. Skill is built in the first three months through daily drills; the course assumes no experience.

iPad and Procreate, or PC and Photoshop?

Both are taught. On campus you work on studio machines with Wacom tablets. Many students buy an iPad later for Procreate; it isn't required.

Is illustration a real job, or a hobby?

Every animated show, game, book cover, ad and app icon starts with an illustrator. The studio next door employs them. Bring a parent to the visit and we'll show them the floor.

Illustration vs 2D Animation — which should I choose?

If you want to design characters and worlds, illustration. If you want to make them move, 2D animation. Some students do one after the other.

Can I freelance after this?

Yes. Illustration is the most freelance-friendly track, and the Portfolio Term is built around producing work you can show clients.

Is there a part-time option?

No. Full-time, on campus.
