How to Choose an Animation Institute: 10 Checks

Animation training in India ranges from genuinely excellent to openly predatory, and the brochures all look the same. This checklist is how to tell them apart — use it on every institute you visit, including ours.
The one question that predicts everything
"Show me the showreels of your last batch — not your best student ever, the middle of the most recent batch." A good institute answers instantly and proudly. A bad one changes the subject to software logos and placement percentages. Whatever that median reel looks like is what you will look like in a year.
The ten checks
Ask all ten. Write the answers down.
- 1. Who teaches — and what have they shipped in the last two years?
- 2. What does the median graduate's showreel look like?
- 3. How often is student work reviewed, and by whom?
- 4. How many students per mentor per batch?
- 5. What exactly do the final months contain — exercises, or production work?
- 6. Which software, which versions, and are fundamentals taught first?
- 7. How many hours of supervised desk time per week?
- 8. What do fees include, and what costs extra later?
- 9. Can you sit in on a running class today, unannounced?
- 10. Will they put their placement claims in writing, with names?
Red flags — walk away
Some patterns reliably mark trouble: '100% placement guarantee' (no honest school can promise other companies' hiring); pressure to pay a 'seat booking' fee today; walls of software logos with no student work in sight; counsellors who talk salaries but can't name the faculty; and courses promising five specialisations in six months.
Green flags — lean in
Working practitioners who teach; visible, recent student work; a weekly review rhythm; small batches; a real production connection; and an institute relaxed about you watching a class before paying. Places confident in their teaching show it off; places confident in their marketing show that off instead.

Frequently asked questions
Are placement guarantees real?
Be skeptical. No institute controls other companies' hiring. Ask for the last batch's actual outcomes with names and studios, in writing — the reaction to that request tells you everything.
Is a big-city institute automatically better?
No — the teaching model matters more than the pin code. A metro classroom far from any production floor teaches less than a smaller city's studio floor. Judge the reels, not the skyline.
Online or offline?
Online suits self-driven learners topping up specific skills. For a first professional foundation, in-person review culture — someone at your desk, weekly, being honest — is what actually builds craft.
How important is the certificate at the end?
Far less than the showreel attached to it. Studios open the reel first; many never read the certificate at all.
